How to get more calls from Google as a plumber, roofer, or landscaper

Updated October 15, 2026 · Bright Porch Sites

Most local service calls still start with a search. Whether someone types “emergency plumber near me,” “roof leak St. Louis,” or “lawn care Chesterfield,” Google decides which businesses to show in Maps and the local pack. You do not need a giant ad budget to improve your odds—you need a complete Profile, a clear website, and consistent follow-through.

Step 1: Win the Map pack basics

Complete your Google Business Profile using the official checklist from Google Business Profile Help:

  • Correct categories (Plumber, Roofing contractor, Landscaper, etc.)
  • Service areas that match where you actually take jobs
  • Phone number you answer during business hours
  • Fresh photos of real work
  • Regular replies to reviews

Duplicate listings and keyword-stuffed names hurt you. Fix those first.

Step 2: Make the click worth it

When someone taps your listing, they should reach a site (or landing page) that:

  • Loads fast on mobile
  • Shows a large Call / Text button above the fold
  • Lists services in customer language
  • Shows service area towns
  • Displays proof: photos, license/insurance notes if accurate, short testimonials you have permission to use

If your listing has no website—or links to a broken Facebook page—many people bounce to the next plumber or roofer in the list.

Step 3: Match search language on the site

You do not need dozens of blog posts on day one. You do need phrases customers use:

  • Plumber: drain cleaning, water heater, leak repair, city/county names
  • Roofer: roof inspection, storm damage, shingle replacement
  • Landscaper: mowing, mulch, cleanup, drainage, seasonal services

Put those phrases in headings and service blurbs naturally. Avoid stuffing.

Step 4: Turn viewers into callers

  • Click-to-call buttons (tel: links)
  • Short quote form for after-hours leads
  • Clear “who we serve” and “what we don’t do” to reduce junk calls
  • Fast reply habits—speed often wins the job

Step 5: Reviews as a growth loop

After a successful job, ask for a Google review with a direct link to your Profile. Thank reviewers publicly. Address fair criticism calmly. Over time, review quality and quantity influence local visibility and conversion.

Step 6: Optional paid boost later

Once the organic basics work, Local Services Ads or Google Ads can amplify plumbers and other home services. Fix the free foundation first so paid clicks land on a page that actually converts.

Weekly rhythm that compounds

  • 2 new job photos on your Profile
  • Reply to every review
  • Confirm NAP consistency (name, phone, site) across directories
  • One small website tweak (seasonal banner, new service line, fresh photo)

More calls from Google rarely come from one magic trick. They come from looking complete, local, and easy to contact—every time someone searches.

Track what works without fancy software

You do not need an enterprise analytics suite. Try a dedicated tracking phone number on the website, or simply ask every new caller “How did you find us?” for two weeks and jot the answers. If Maps mentions dominate, double down on photos and reviews. If “your website” comes up, improve the headline and call button.

Local relevance without spam

Create one honest page or section per major service rather than doorway pages for every ZIP code. Mention nearby landmarks or suburbs only when you truly serve them. Thin, duplicated city pages can look manipulative to search engines and to customers.

For landscapers with seasonal demand, update the homepage banner each season (spring cleanup, summer mowing, fall leaf removal, winter prep). Freshness signals activity; outdated “April special” banners in October do the opposite.
